Geopark activity principles
According to the UNESCO definition, Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Geoparks are belong to an international cooperation network. Their goal is to raise awareness and pride of the locals by underlining the importance of the area’s geological heritage and by making it a part of local communities’ lives. Saimaa Geopark aims to support the region’s tourism, businesses, internationalisation, education and research by sustainable environmental management as well as by emphasising the geological and cultural characteristics of the region.
