Alvar Aalto's design
The Church of the Three Crosses, completed in 1957, was designed by Alvar Aalto. The church was inaugurated a year later. It is a major tourist attraction. The theme of the church is the triple motif, which is repeated throughout the church. The only actual artwork in the church is a stylized stained glass depicting a crown of thorns. The work was designed by Alvar Aalto and made by S. Wuorio. The altarpiece is replaced by three white wooden crosses, after which the church is named. The shadows of the crosses representing the crosses of Golgotha fall impressively on the white wall just at the time of the service. The church has up to 101 different windows.
The Church of the Three Crosses is marked on the Vuoksenniska Saimaa Geopark sign. The sign is along Vuoksenniskantie road next to the school. The Vuoksenniska geological forest trail runs along the Vuoksenniska ice-marginal delta, on the outer edge of which the Church of the Three Crosses is built.
