Nuijamaa church
The first church in Nuijamaa was completed in 1887, when the parish was still part of the rural parish of Vyborg. However, the church burnt down right at the beginning of the Continuation War in June 1941. Due to the parish's tight financial situation, the construction of the new church was supported by the Churches in Karelia Fund and the American chapter of the Lutheran World Federation.
When completed, the new church was the first post-war reconstruction church. The belfry was completed a year later. The monument to the Tomb of Heroes next to the belfry depicts the divided parish.
Next to the Nuijamaa church is the Saimaa Geopark geological site of the Ring Stone, a colonial boulder of rapakite granite that was transported by the ancient continental glacier. The story of the Ring Stone is the subject of an animation produced by Rural Explorer (story by Pekka Vartiainen). The animation also tells the story of the Nuijamaa church.
