Saimaa Geopark receives green card for evaluation

evaluation successfully completed

The evaluators, Ibrahim Komoo from Malaysia and Gloria Maria Garcia-Hoyo from Spain, visited Saimaa Geopark during 5 days in Mikkeli, Puumala, Taipalsaari, Lappeenranta and Imatra and were pleased with what they saw. The evaluators provided valuable advice on how to improve our actions. They praised the measures taken to strengthen culture in our region and also highlighted the link between living nature and geology. Since the previous evaluation, the Saimaa region has implemented measures to improve the accessibility of the Geopark area. The network approach of the Saimaa region could also be a lesson for other parts of the world.

The evaluation uses a three-tier system to assess the Geoparks' performance. Geoparks that meet the criteria are awarded a green card. If the criteria are not met, the Geopark is given a "yellow card", which means that the area has two years to make the necessary corrections. In the worst case scenario, the result could be a red card, which eliminates the use of UNESCO status for the area.

The assessments also ensure that the site is developed. As a small organisation, we benefit from collaboration with a variety of stakeholders. Geology is a major asset and a permanent feature of our region. Getting municipalities, businesses and associations to work together to build the future of Saimaa is crucial for the development of the region. Geopark and UNESCO status provide an excellent basis for our activities.

The next evaluation will take place in four years' time, in the summer of 2028. There is still room for improvement for the next four-year period, especially in terms of deepening cooperation with educational institutions and building international cooperation.

Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark is part of the global UNESCO Geopark Network. UNESCO's global network currently includes 2013 Geoparks. Saimaa was accepted into the UNESCO network in spring 2021. The status is granted to Geoparks for four years at a time, after which a re-evaluation is carried out.
