Museums in a historic fortress
Lappeenranta Fortress is a popular tourist destination and offers a comprehensive range of services for tourists. Construction of the fortress on the first Salpausseland was started in the 1720s by the Swedes. The fortress is home to the Museum of South Karelia and the Lappeenranta Art Museum.
Lappeenranta Art Museum
The Lappeenranta Art Museum is located in the Lappeenranta Fortress, opposite the Orthodox Church, in the barracks buildings built in 1798. Exhibitions focus on contemporary art, but older art is also regularly shown. The main focus is on art from south-east Finland, but there are also exhibitions of foreign art. The museum's collections consist mainly of Finnish visual art from the 19th century to the present day.
The museum has a museum shop, which is open during museum opening hours.
South Karelia Museum
The Museum of South Karelia is located at the northern tip of the fortress in sturdy, grey stone buildings in the former gun emplacement. The buildings are different from other neoclassical buildings in the area, as the building material is, exceptionally, local limestone. The building was completed in the early 19th century. The museum's collections are based on those of the Lappeenranta City Museum, the Vyborg City Museum and the Käkisalmi Museum. In addition to present-day South Karelia, the museum also presents and records the history of the ceded parishes.
