Experience the canal built by Suvorov
A famous Russian general, Aleksander Suvorov managed the construction of four Suvorov canals named after him. The Kutvele, Käyhkää, Kukonharju and Telataipale canals allowed Russia’s Saimaa navy to pass safely between the Lappeenranta, Kärnäkoski and Olavinlinna fortifications near the border. The canal system and fortifications were built to counter neighbouring Sweden and its Saimaa navy operating out of Ristiina. There is a Saimaa Geopark sign at the Telataipale parking area. At the northeast end of the channel there is a wharf suitable even for large vessels, and the canal is also easily accessible by car, as it is located along the road 438.
