Experience the special moraine ridges
Suuri and Pieni Sarviniemi are water-encircled marginal moraines of the Second Salpausselkä ice marginal formation, created by the momentary stagnation of the melting glacier between 11 800 and 11 600 years ago. As the ridges formed by the Sarviniemi were washed away by the waves, particularly during the SuurSaimaa phase, the bouldery nature of the deposited material is accentuated on the peninsulas.
Sarviniemi is also an excursion destination for the South Karelia Recreation Area Foundation, and the information kiosk built by the Foundation also has signposts for Saimaa Geopark. The Sarviniemi recreation area is also partly suitable for people with reduced mobility. The hiking bridges are connected by barrier-free footbridges and the harbour area can be accessed by a gravel road. From the harbour toilet/maintenance building there is an easy path to the top of the Great Sarviniemi with an accessible viewing platform.
Sarviniemi is a day trip destination. Overnight stays are not allowed.
