finland & geoparks

In Finland, you’re never more than a short walk from nature!

Whether you want to escape to lush forests, adventure in Arctic wilderness or relax on open coasts, Finland has plenty of space for everyone to explore. Plus, the flora and fauna are like nowhere else on Earth – especially when viewed under the spectacular Northern Lights.

Finland is the Land of a Thousand Lakes, with the largest lake district in Europe. This region is a blue and green labyrinth of forests, lakes and islands, all intertwined and forming ridges and passageways to secret lagoons and hideaways.

There are 224,661 islands in Finland and forests cover 3/4 of the country's area.

VISIT FINLAND

FINNISH GEOPARKS

Ancient mountain ranges, tropical sandy beaches, meteorite craters, continental glaciers kilometres thick, and enormous volumes of meltwater shaping the terrain are snapshots in the story of Finland’s development over the course of 3.5 billion years to its present form.

Lakes, rocks, eskers, bogs, and forests, as well as villages, towns, and vast arable landscapes, conceal signs of past upheaval and important changes, entire worlds that no longer exist, except in the form of crumbs of earth, names on a map, or stories in folklore.

Finnish Geoparks reveal these hidden stories, transforming the ordinary into the exotic, making the unknown feel familiar. Come and discover the stories hidden in the landscape.
